500. ABOUT FACE—APPLIQUÉ PORTRAITS *$175

I/A,D,H,PC,AP  Charlotte Warr Andersen

Use a photo to make a pattern for a realistic portrait and then hand appliqué to create the face. Drawing and stitching exercises help to reinforce how the process works. Bring one or more head shots of a person or animal. This study in reverse layering is involved, but mastery of the technique is well worth the extra effort. Class elaborates on techniques from Faces & Places - Images in Appliqué and in its sequel, Focus on Features—Life-like Portrayals in Appliqué (available by print-on-demand or e-book, but not necessary to take the class).

*CLASS FEE - $170 + MAT FEE - $5 = $175

SUPPLIES: Sewing Needles; Sewing Thread to Match Fabric; Scissors (Fabric Cutting); Embroidery Scissors (cut to the point); Thimble; Pins; Eraser; Mechanical Pencil; Colored Pencils; Paper, Pen, & Pencil; Tracing Paper; Small Trash Bag; Scotch Tape; Fine-tip Black Sharpie Pen; removable fabric markers; masking tape; Fraycheck; write-on transparency film; battery-operated light box (opt); sturdy paper lg enough to create the intended sz of project; select portrait photographs—give yourself a wide choice and then narrow it to one or two. Email photo to warrandersen@gmail.com at least two weeks before class for pre-screening for feasibility. When emailing photos try to reduce the resolution of photos, so they don't appear bigger than a monitor screen, (Lg resolution photos use up the band width on server quickly). After consultation, enlarge photograph to approx 8in-10in from chin to top of head. It is OK to print from computer on letter sz paper and splice together with tape to make a larger sz. Fabric: multiple choices of fabric appropriate to the sz and subject matter of project (at least four to six shades or values from light to dk of the colors for any flesh, hair, or fur), prints and textures can be used where applicable. Flesh-toned fabric avail for purchase in class but bring what you can find as well.
